Find the closest jail or prison and give them a call. Find out who their dentist is. In some cases, you'll be able to get them to work on you pro bono.
In his case, he started volunteering at the jail, and the dentist there gave him free dental care.

If you are low income there is help available in lots of states.
You can also check dental student clinics
Usually they are subsidised but not free
